The Thermals album was amazing. I was addicted to it for weeks. It wins for energy and lyrics, but for compositional intricacy and catchiness, I feel that Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix deserves at least an honorable mention.

Shockingly I have not yet listened to Phoenix although I've heard many songs from it. I must...

And yeah, Body/Blood/Machine is just amazing. I keep coming back to it. It's such a nice rallying cry. So many of the songs on it really open up after repeated listens. Indeed, the old testament is an excellent template for struggle and raw emotion and great rock music :-)
